LFC’s Super Cup battle with Chelsea set to break new ground in historical move

The Super Cup will be contested by Champions League winners Liverpool and Europa League winners Chelsea in Istanbul this summer.

And while the focus will be on the winners and losers on the day, there is something else that will turn a few heads.

Referee Stephanie Frappart will become the first woman to take charge of a major European game in the men’s game, in a historical move that’l surely break new ground.

The 35-year-old became the first woman to referee a Ligue 1 match in April, when she officiated a game between Amiens and Strasbourg, and is notable for refereeing the Women’s World Cup final.

To work on the most prestigious award in the women’s game, it’s fair to say that the Reds and Blues will be in safe hands when they meet in Turkey.

Liverpool and Chelsea, old European rivals, will lock horns on the 14th of August for the first major piece of silverware this season.

Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to add to his Champions League medal, and Frank Lampard will be excited at the prospect of winning his first piece of silverware as Chelsea manager as he rides on the coat tails of former boss Maurizio Sarri.
