Liverpool in position to break long-standing Man United record this season

Liverpool and Manchester United are the two most successful clubs in English football – a fact that is unlikely to change in the coming years.

The Reds have 60 honours, with Arsenal coming in third with 46, and our bitter rivals boast a slightly more impressive 66.

Sir Alex Ferguson promised to knock Liverpool off their perch, and he did somewhat, but now Jurgen Klopp’s men are ready to reclaim their spot as top bird.

I’ll be honest, it’s highly unlikely we win every trophy available to us this season – but that’s not the point. The takeaway from the situation we find ourselves in is that, after all the Scotsman’s hard work, we may be able to soon sit happily back on our perch.

Following our success in the Champions League last season, the Reds are now in a position to equal United’s honours list. It would mean winning the FA Community Shield, Super Cup, League Cup, FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League, but it is possible.

Technically.

Liverpool’s first chance to win one of six major honours this season comes this weekend as the Reds take on United’s rivals Manchester City at Wembley for the Community Shield.

Klopp will be desperate to build on the success of last season, and while nobody is expecting us to win everything this season, the Shield is a good place to start.
