Pepe Reina keen on Anfield return before Liverpool opted for Adrian

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina was hoping for a return to Anfield before the Reds made a move for Adrian instead.

It would have been interesting to see Simon Mignolet replacing Reina to then get replace by the Spaniard six years down the line!

This news comes from The Athletic UK reporter James Pearce who revealed in a Q&A that the former Anfield hero was keen on returning to Liverpool.

I’m not aware of anything else being imminent,Pearce said in his Q&A.

LFC haven’t completely ruled it out though. [Jurgen] Klopp mentioned on the tour of the States that there was one position he was still looking at.

In terms of the keeper situation, I know Pepe Reina was very keen to come back to LFC but the club decided to go for Adrian instead.

Alex McCarthy was also on the shortlist drawn up.

The 36-year-old is currently plying his trade at Serie A club AC Milan after stints at Napoli and Bayern Munich following his departure from the Reds.

In my mind, Reina would have been a perfect backup for Alisson. Don’t get me wrong, Adrian is a more than capable alternative, and I think nostalgia is getting me here, but I’d have love to see Pepe back on Merseyside.

Alisson and Reina have a lot in common – where the Brazilian drop kicks the ball 70 yards to Bobby Firmino or Mo Salah, the Spaniard would just launch into the same spot.

Swap Fernando Torres out for Mo and the picture just paints itself!
