Virgil van Dijk explains why the Reds are even more driven to perform this season

Virgil van Dijk says that despite winning the Champions League last year, the Reds have unfinished business to complete this season having been beaten to the Premier League title by a point.

Manchester City have averaged 99 points over the last two seasons, and will get close to the century once again this year, but Van Dijk says the Reds have all the motivation they need in order to beat them to first place.

He said, via ESPN: “They [Manchester City] are incredible. And so are we. To get so close in the league was remarkable — 97 points and just one defeat — so it was disappointing not to win it, but I put that feeling away.

“I could respect that City were one point better last season. It’s driven me on to work even more, to push the limits and help do everything we can to win.

“We know it will be difficult, because they will improve and so will the other teams, but we are not afraid of challenges.”

It will be a massive challenge to win the title against Pep Guardiola’s side, but that’s the best way to win it. Strolling to victory by 30 points would be far less fun.

Every three points will be hugely significant this season, starting against Norwich City at Anfield on Friday night, where the Reds will need to get off to a good start. Win convincingly there, and confidence will be boosted immediately.
