John Barnes says Liverpool will have no problem keeping hold of Sadio Mane – or indeed, any other player – in future transfer windows, because Real Madrid do not have the significant draw that they once did.
The Bernabeu side have been linked with both Mane and Mo Salah in the past, but Barnes insists neither would want to leave Anfield any time soon.
Speaking to Bonus Code Bets, he said: “The days are gone where Real Madrid can sign anyone [they like]. Now the Premier League is the place to play.
“Are Madrid better than Liverpool? I don’t necessarily think they are. I don’t think [Sadio] Mane will leave at all. Of course, he could fit into any team, but I’d be surprised if he went to Real Madrid.”
It’s hard to disagree with Barnes in terms of players leaving the Reds, though Eden Hazard shows Real Madrid is still a big draw.
Chelsea were nowhere near the level of the Reds last season, so that would have played a role in the Belgian leaving, but the fact it was Real Madrid will have been important too.
The main thing is that the Reds keep winning major honours. Do that, and the draw of Real Madrid will be limited as much as possible.
