‘Let the race begin’: Sterling primed for battle with Reds after opening weekend win

Red-turned-rival Raheem Sterling has taken to Twitter to lay down the gauntlet after Manchester City’s emphatic win against West Ham.

City started their title defence with a resounding, and slightly ominous, 5-0 victory at the London Stadium.

It edged them a couple of goals ahead of their chief rivals Liverpool after round 1 of 38.

And Sterling, who kick-started his own Golden Boot bid with a hat-trick, appears to be relishing the resumption of last season’s epic fight.

‘Let the race begin,’ he tweeted.

Supporters need no reminding that City edged the greatest-ever title race with 98 points to our 97.

It’s widely expected to be a two-horse race at the top once again, though Spurs, who finished a distant third, could close-up after making big-money moves for Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso.

Pep Guardiola has also made some expensive additions in the form of Rodri and Joao Cancelo and though it was a much quieter summer for Liverpool, our Champions-League winning squad is only getting better at an individual and collective level.

The first of two league meetings between the sides takes place at Anfield on November 9.

Sterling & co. can expect a very hostile reception as the home crowd look to roar their team onto what would be a critical victory.
