Kane: Liverpool ‘set the standard’

Harry Kane has claimed Spurs simply need to keep touching distance with Liverpool and Manchester City this season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Champions League Finalists are expected to be the closest challengers to ourselves and City, especially after their impressive summer in the transfer window in which they acquired Gio Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele.

At the weekend, they beat Aston Villa, despite losing an early lead, and looked decent in doing so – with two goals from Kane himself.

“We have to make sure we get off to a good start. Liverpool set the standard on Friday night and City on Saturday afternoon, so it’s important that we stay in touch as long as we can,” he told the Mirror.

“We have full belief that we can go all the way but there’s a long road ahead. That’s why we buy players: to strengthen the squad and have more competition for places. That’s what we’ve got.

“We’ve got a good, hungry squad. Everyone’s fit and ready to go. The players that came on have to try to make an impact and they did. It’s important for us if we’re going to have a good season.”

Spurs are exceptional, as are City – but we’re more than confident we have enough quality in the side to challenge on multiple fronts this season.

Our main issue going into the next few weeks of course is not having Alisson between our sticks – but hopefully Adrian will prove an able deputy.

The Spaniard has Premier League experience and is better with the ball at his feet than the man he replaced, Simon Mignolet.

With Virgil van Dijk in front of him, we still hope Liverpool’s defence does the business.
