Pat Nevin says he has no doubts whatsoever that Arsenal’s new signing Kieran Tierney is a better player than the Reds’ Andy Robertson – and that he could be as good as another ex-Celtic man, Virgil van Dijk.
Both Scotland internationals play left-back, and former Chelsea and Everton man Nevin claims Arsenal’s new £25 million signing is who he would choose ‘without even waiting’.

Tierney is an excellent player, but he has only played for Celtic so far. Robertson has been to back-to-back Champions League finals and has been involved at the top end of the best league in the world – he is the best left-back in the world right now.

For Scotland, Robertson is the captain of his country and is chosen at left-back ahead of Tierney, who has to play at centre-back to get into the side.
Nevin is an excellent pundit and shows no bias against the Reds despite his Everton links, but on this occasion, he’s made a strange comment. Some of the replies to that Off The Ball tweet sum up what most people think of that opinion – it’s nonsense.
Tierney could be an exceptional buy for the Gunners and is obviously a great player, but he’s not as good as Robertson just now. It’s highly unnlikely he’ll ever be as good as Van Dijk, either.
