Adrian could still be ready to face Saints on Saturday

Liverpool remain hopeful that Adrian can start against Southampton this weekend despite picking up a farcical injury.

The Reds’ no.2, deputising for a sidelined Alisson, is managing a swollen ankle after being inexplicably tackled by a supporter in the celebrations following his decisive Super Cup penalty save.

He was forced to sit out our only pre-match training session earlier on Friday.

However, according to James Pearce of The Athletic, our medical staff might have a solution.

It will be decided on Saturday morning whether the 32-year-old can play with heavy strapping and a dose of painkillers.

According to Jurgen Klopp, Adrian said his ankle was feeling ‘much better’ after reporting to Melwood.

There seems a slight element of desperation here amid this goalkeeping crisis.

The Reds would have to turn to the veteran Andy Lonergan, an emergency signing, or the untested Caoimhin Kelleher if Adrian is ultimately ruled out.

With an ever-growing injury list and a high level of fatigue after Wednesday’s gruelling Super Cup, the players are going to have dig extremely deep to grind out a victory at St Mary’s.
