‘I’m very optimistic’ – Adrian on Saints starting chances

Adrian is confident he will have recovered from his ‘strange’ ankle injury in time to play against Southampton on Saturday.

Reds fans were left stunned after learning the Spaniard was a doubt for the trip to St Mary’s after a pitch-invading supporter tackled him during the post-UEFA Super Cup celebrations.

Speaking to the club website at Melwood, he shed some light on the baffling circumstances.

“Today I feel much better,” he said.

“It was a strange, weird situation because we were celebrating between us and one guy jumped from the crowd and started running.

“I think he slipped in front of us and also the security with him and made me a tackle from the side. It was a bit of a strange situation but I feel much better today and I hope [I’m] ready for tomorrow.”

The 32-year-old had to sit out training on Friday, but he is still hopeful the swelling around his ankle will ease sufficiently for him to start.

“I think I have many chances [of starting],” he said.

“I feel mentally ready and I also hope today with the treatment of the ankle it’s going to be much better.

“But I’m very optimistic to start playing tomorrow again.”

Adrian will be assessed by the club medical staff in the morning and will likely have to wear strapping and take painkillers if he is to feature, James Pearce has reported.

It would certainly be a relief to see him atop the team sheet, with Alisson’s injury already a significant setback.

Neither Andy Lonergan nor Caoimhin Kelleher, the two alternatives, have played in the Premier League.
