Klopp unfazed by Adrian error in Saints win

Jurgen Klopp joked about the similarities between Adrian’s blunder against Southampton and an error from Alisson Becker at Leicester last season, playing down the no.2’s lapse.

With Liverpool leading 2-0 at St Mary’s, the ‘keeper struck Danny Ings with an attempted clearance and the ball rebounded into the net, setting up a nervy finish.

Adrian had had an impressive afternoon prior to that, pulling off some fantastic saves.

In a game last September, no.1 stopper Alisson inexplicably conceded possession to a Leicester attacker and was punished. Again, Liverpool were able to hold on for a 2-1 win.

With three points to take about Liverpool, Klopp was able to note the irony.

“Second half we made another big step, controlled the game better, did a lot of good things,” he told reporters including This Is Anfield.

“Then minute 83 showed up on the screen and Adrian thought ‘I played really well, so maybe like Ali did maybe I have to make the same mistake’, and kept the game open.

“The boys then went ‘really? We have to go again?’.”

Klopp was asked what he said to the Spaniard after the match and revealed that, rather than issuing criticism, he laughed it off.

“[I told him Finally, you arrived. Welcome. Ali did the same, obviously it’s a goalie thing at Liverpool,” he said.

“No problem with that as long as we win the games.”

Opposition attackers will of course target Adrian now, as they did Alisson in the games following his mistake.

But clearly Klopp is confident he too will learn from the ultimately inconsequential gaffe and play with greater caution.
