Bayern sporting director explains where Coutinho will play

Bayern Munich plan on playing Coutinho in their attack rather in midfield, according to sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić.

Today, the Germans confirmed the loan deal of Barcelona’s Brazilian, which includes a very pricy option to buy at the end of the season.

We’d suggest the 27-year-old’s best football of his career came at Liverpool when deployed in a central midfield three, but this doesn’t appear to be an option at Bayern, based on Salihamidžić’s quotes.

“Philippe made it very clear to us during the negotiations that he absolutely wanted to move to FC Bayern. He’s a world-class player with great ability, who we can deploy in a number of positions in our forward line,” he said upon the confirmation of the transfer, cited by journalist JD Nalton on Twitter.

“We’ve been working on bringing [him] in for quite some time. With his creativity and outstanding skills, Philippe is a player who will immediately strengthen our attack.”

In fairness, Bayern often play a 4-2-3-1, so Coutinho could potentially play as a no.10, a position he didn’t always get the opportunity to fill at either Liverpool or Barcelona.

Bayern are the best side in the Bundesliga, so as long as he gets a regular starting spot in the side, we see no reason why he won’t be a success, despite his failings in Spain.

Not that it’s particularly our concern anymore, of course…
