Carra warns that Arsenal could ‘make Liverpool pay’

Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool will have ‘major problems’ against Arsenal if they don’t tighten-up defensively.

The Reds’ backline has been uncharacteristically vulnerable in our opening games, shipping four goals in three matches and being cut-open all too often.

A feature of our play has been the high line we’ve held, which might be problematic against the blistering pace of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe.

Carragher warned that Liverpool can expect to be punished by that clinical frontline after a number of let-offs.

“When I say Liverpool have got away with it, the quality of the opposition hasn’t been top class, and I said it after the Norwich game, if they were playing a top team today, they wouldn’t have won,” he explained on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “Considering they won 4-1, it’s a big thing to say I suppose.

“But the quality Arsenal have, if Liverpool get caught in those positions and don’t run back they’re going to have major problems within the game.

“Of course, Liverpool are going to cause big problems going the other way I have no doubt about that, but the chances, the shots on goal they’re allowing at this moment, better quality teams, better quality strikers are going to make Liverpool pay.”

One thing which might come to our aid is the week-long interval between the trip to Southampton and the Saturday evening clash.

It gives Klopp time to work on some tactical tweaks to minimise the number of openings afforded the visitors.
