Jerzy Dudek claims there’s only one option for the Reds’ next boss when Jurgen Klopp moves on

Former Reds goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek says Steven Gerrard is the only candidate the club will consider when Jurgen Klopp moves on from the manager’s seat.

There is no suggestion yet that Klopp has had enough at Anfield, but a variety of stories have surfaced this week discussing how long he will remain at the club.

Gerrard is doing well at the moment for Rangers, but still needs more time to develop as a coach. Perhaps when Klopp does move on, he’ll be ready – though for us, that is entirely dependent on when the German leaves. Dudek is in no doubt, however.

Writing for Polish newspaper Przeglad Sportowy, via the Daily Express, he explained: “When I was in Liverpool recently, it was no secret that Steven is the man and indeed, only candidate for replacing Klopp when he decides his time at Anfield is over.

“Everyone knows that sooner or later the great captain will return.”

Dudek did admit, though, that he was surprised Gerrard wanted to become a coach at all.

He added: “I was with Steven in the Liverpool dressing room for many years. I must admit I was amazed he became a manager so quickly after finishing playing.

“I spent a lot of time with him in private too and not once did he ever mention to me he wanted to become a manager.”

As Dudek says, Gerrard, at some point, will manage the Reds – that seems almost inevitable.

There might be someone else who comes in before he does – Pep Lijnders, one of Klopp’s highly trusted assistants, is another potential option – but Gerrard will get the top job sooner rather than later.

Hopefully, though, we’ve a few more years of Klopp to go yet!
