Sky Sports pundit jokingly claims Virgil van Dijk was annoyed with Joel Matip for scoring against Arsenal

Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara has joked that Virgil van Dijk was unhappy with Joel Matip after he scored against Arsenal at the weekend – because he wanted to get on the scoresheet himself.

Matip powerfully headed home Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner kick in the first half to give the Reds the lead in the game, and from then on, Jurgen Klopp’s men took control of the contest.

Kamara, though, spotted that Van Dijk was remonstrating with the referee instead of celebrating with his partner, joking that he wanted the goal to be ruled out by the VAR and for a penalty to be awarded.

Via the Daily Express, Kamara said: “How loud are the Kop when Liverpool score? The one person who doesn’t hear [the crowd] is Virgil van Dijk.

“Why doesn’t he hear them? Because when Matip sticks this ball in the back of the net, he wants a penalty for a foul on him by [Matteo] Guendouzi and he just looks at the referee.

“He’s stood there, even though everyone else is going wild, he’s stood looking at the referee saying ‘give me something, give me a pen, I’m not having my centre-half partner get a goal’. There’s being ruthless but go and celebrate with Matip, he just scored!”

Kamara says some strange things, though he can be quite funny sometimes – intentionally or otherwise!

Van Dijk and Matip are likely to be the centre-back pairing next weekend when the Reds face Burnley at Turf Moor. Both will have to be at their best on that day in order to cope with the physical test Sean Dyche’s side are guaranteed to provide.
