‘More to it than meets the eye’: BBC pundit claims something’s up with Ryan Kent still yet to depart

BBC Sport pundit Noel Whelan, a former Premier League striker with Leeds United, says there is something happening behind the scenes when it comes to Ryan Kent departing the Reds this summer.

Kent will not be allowed to leave on loan, but no club has come close to matching the Reds’ valuation of around £12 million as of yet.

It is thought that Kent is keen on a move back to Scotland. He played for the Reds’ U23s in their first game of the season against Tottenham, but has not been seen for Neil Critchley’s team since.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said: “There’s more to it than meets the eye. He’s obviously desperate to carry on where he left off last season and join up again with Stevie Gerrard.

“He’s just had the best season of his life, showed he can win games in Scotland and be a hero at a massive club. The Rangers fans love him and are desperate for him to go back, which tells you a lot.

“I think he should re-join Rangers. He’s not going to play for Liverpool as there are too many brilliant players blocking his path. You can see why he wants to join Rangers, but they’re going to need to agree a price with Liverpool first.”

A move back to Rangers would make perfect sense for the 22-year-old, who is clearly not going to get a sniff at first-team football with the Reds any time soon.

Working with Gerrard again would be ideal for him, but agreeing a fee is going to be tough. The Reds won’t let him go cheaply, but Rangers won’t go to £12 million – they haven’t spent that much on a player in around two decades and simply do not have the finances.
