Former Liverpool and USA goalkeeper Brad Friedel has backed new boy Adrian to do a job for the Reds, in the absence of Brazil star Alisson.
So far, the Spaniard has conceded four times in his last three appearances for the club, but none of these goals has resulted in Liverpool dropping points.
It was a bit touch and go against Southampton though as a slender 2-1 win is all we could come away from St Mary’s with, following a calamity of an error.
But, as per two sentences ago, it didn’t cost us any points.
Former Reds stopper Friedel believes that Adrian is more than capable of stepping into Alisson’s shoes while he recovers from an injury.
“People will compare Adrian to Alisson but that’s not fair, Alisson is one of the best in the world and he will be missed. Luckily for Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp has got such a good team that there’ll be a lot of games that won’t need to be decided by the goalkeeper,” he told US-bookies.com
“Klopp won’t admit that but there’s very few weaknesses in the team. They can possess the ball, they’re strong down the wings, they can counterattack. (Virgil) Van Dijk has sured up the defence. Even if the keeper makes a mistake, there’ll be a lot of games where they’ll still win.”
Liverpool take on Burnley this weekend, in what will surely be another test for Adrian between the sticks. Turf Moor isn’t the easiest place to go in the Premier League, and the Reds will need to be on their A-game.
For what it’s worth, I think Adrian is an adequate stand-in for Alisson. The problem with the back-up goalkeeper is that nobody of a similar ability to the starting stopper will be happy playing second fiddle.
The Spaniard is certainly good enough, and he seems thrilled to just be a Liverpool player – a match made in Heaven, it seems.
