Liverpool omit defender from CL squad but include Harvey Elliott

Liverpool have named their Champions League squad ahead of the Group Stages which get underway shortly after the international break.

Jurgen Klopp has included 16-year-old Harvey Elliott, but left promising youngster Ki-Jana Hoever out – which may come as a surprise to many.

Here’s the squad in full:

Alisson, Elliott, Firmino, Salah, Gomez, Henderson, Keita, Lallana, Lonergan, Lovren, Mane, Matip, Milner, Origi, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Robertson, Adrian, Shaqiri, Fabinho, Van den Berg, Van Dijk, Wijnaldum, Alexander-Arnold, Brewster, Jones, Kane, Kelleher, Larouci, Lewis

With Dejan Lovren remaining at the club, we suppose there wasn’t really any need for a fifth central defender – although summer signing Sepp Van den Berg has made the cut.

It’s not a massive deal in truth, and the 17-year-old could well feature in our EFL Cup tie with MK Dons at the end of the month.

We’re glad to see Elliott involved again, though. Klopp obviously rates him very highly – that much became obvious in the summer during the pre-season friendlies.

The Reds are in a group with Napoli, Genk and Salzburg and are heavy favourites to progress.

Our trip to Italy will be tough, however, and would define which team finishes top.
