Carra says some Liverpool fans are ‘bang out of order’ about Owen

Jamie Carragher has leapt to the defence of his friend and former team-mate Michael Owen, who has received an almighty backlash following the release of his book, Reboot.

In it, Owen calls sections of both Newcastle and Liverpool’s support ‘delusional,’ which has naturally gone down horribly with both sets of fans…

In the interest of fairness, we haven’t read the book, and the quotes are serialised snippets that have gone viral via online newspapers and then social media.

But the reaction has been fairly vitriolic, which Carra thinks is unfair.

“There’s no doubt, in speaking to Michael, he’s been desperate to do this book and get a lot off his chest for a while,” he told the Mirror.

“That is mainly down to his decision to leave Liverpool and, years later, join Manchester United.

“I tried to stop him doing both!

“I must say I think some of the stick from Liverpool fans is bang out of order considering what he did for the club and the reaction other players get who did nothing for Liverpool.

“It hurts Michael and his family, but hopefully this book will let people know the real story and why he came to these decisions.”

Here’s how we see it at EOTK:

Owen obviously wanted a move back to Liverpool, firstly when at Real Madrid, and then when at Newcastle – and the fact this didn’t happen is not his fault.

It was however his decision to leave in the first place – and the fact he cannot fathom how him signing for Manchester United and winning the Premier League irks some Reds shows an inability to see his situation from a different perspective.

He could simply apologise for doing so, but the fact of the matter is he doesn’t think he did anything wrong. This is fine, too – but as a result he cannot expect the legendary recognition his performances between 1997 and 2004 probably deserved.

Again though, the nastiness delivered in his direction is way over the top. Luis Suarez did far, far worse as a Liverpool player and was hero worshipped right up until his behaviour in the Champions League semi-final last season – when everyone saw his true colours from the other side!
