Liverpool Echo deny reports claiming Virgil van Dijk is set to sign a new contract

The Liverpool Echo have moved quickly to deny reports that Reds stalwart Virgil van Dijk is set to sign a new deal with the club, and say the suggestions have irked the centre half.

It was reported by the Mirror over the weekend that the Dutch international had agreed to a new six-year deal that would see him stay at Anfield until his 33rd birthday.

The Dutch international has played a pivotal role in the Liverpool defence becoming one of the best in Europe, and won the PFA and UEFA’s Player of the Year awards for his troubles.

Liverpool are reportedly set rewarded their start defender with a new contract that will see his wages increase from £125,000 per week to £200,000, if the Mirror are to be believed, but it’s now been denied by the Echo.

The same Mirror report suggested that the terms of the new contract were laid out last week, to end a summer of negotiations with the big man’s representatives and the club.

This one is difficult – while the Liverpool Echo are probably the most reliable source for LFC news, the Mirror aren’t usually far off.

It’s possible that a contract is close to being agreed, but someone at the national ‘paper has jumped the gun, and the Echo are doing right by the club to deny everything that’s being claimed.

Whatever the case, I’d be surprised if the Mirror have just made this up out of thin air.
