Lonergan explains main difference in Klopp’s training compared to the lower leagues

Liverpool’s fourth choice keeper Andy Lonergan, who strangely arrived in the summer on a Bosman, has explained the increase in quality on a day to day basis in training from what he’s been used to throughout his career.

Throughout the Englishman’s career, he’s been at clubs like Rochdale and Middlesbrough – so we can imagine that working under Jurgen Klopp, alongside Alisson and with players like Mo Salah and Sadio Mane having shots at you all day – would have been some step up!

“It has been a brilliant experience and it is a job where you’ve got to reach the highest of standards every day,” Lonergan told the Lancashire Evening Post.

“If you aren’t on your game in training, you will get found out straight away. You’ve got a world-class forward line firing shots at you in training every day.

“I’ve been at clubs before where you’ve had a couple of players who maybe aren’t great in training but will produce in a game.

“At Liverpool, every player is on it in every training session, the standard of work and finishing in training is brilliant. They are a great bunch of lads, very down to earth people who are at the top of their game.”

Lonergan isn’t actually on the bench at the moment, despite Alisson’s injury, with Klopp deciding that Caoimhin Kelleher will back up Adrian while we’re waiting for the Brazilian to return.

As a result, we’re very unlikely to see Lonergan make his Liverpool debut for real unless both Adrian and the young Irishman pick up an injury before Alisson comes back.

That would be a very worrying situation, so let’s hope Lonergan plays his part in training – and that’s it!

Adrian has done well in the absence of Alisson and we’re not worried about his role between the sticks.

His one mistake came against Southampton, but thankfully, it didn’t cost us.
