The hefty bonus Virgil van Dijk pocketed last season as a just reward for his scintillating performances

Virgil van Dijk, who remains the favourite to take home the Ballon d’Or for 2019 after his sensational performances over the last few months, earned a bonus of £750,000 for his work last season, according to the Daily Mirror.

According to the report, Van Dijk has a complex set of rules written into his contract, which is heavily incentivised, as most Reds player’s contracts are, to reward good performances.

He had to reach 22 clean sheets last season, the report states, in order to qualify for the bonus payment, and he was involved in 26 across all competitions, excelling alongside Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, and in front of the imperious Alisson Becker.

It was reported last week that the 28-year-old was close to agreeing a new six-year deal at the club worth £250,000 per week, but that, according to the Liverpool ECHO, is not the case.

Nevertheless, it seems Van Dijk is being well-rewarded for his stellar showings for the Reds – and rightly so.
