Liverpool want to commit James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum to new contracts, according to the Athletic via the Mirror.

Milner, who moved to Anfield from Manchester City in 2015, has only 10 months remaining on his deal.

But the report states that extending his stay is one of the club’s priorities.

Talks are thought to have been held between officials and Milner’s representatives.

One stumbling block might be his salary, with Liverpool ‘likely’ to seek a reduction in his current £120,000-a-week earnings given what could be dwindling involvement.

According to the same source, Wijnaldum will also enter negotiations over improved terms.

The Dutchman still has two years left on his current contract.

But he has made over 100 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side since the beginning of the 2017/18 season, and a contract upgrade would reflect his importance.

Elsewhere, a new Virgil van Dijk does not appear to imminent.

The club have denied reports that he has agreed terms.
