Messi makes bold Anfield admission as Liverpool’s 4-0 pummelling continues to sting

Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona.

It truly was one of the greatest, if not, the greatest, European night at Anfield.

The stars aligned and Jurgen Klopp’s Reds overturned a 3-0 Nou Camp deficit to beat the Spanish champions and in turn, qualify for the Champions League Final that we went on to win.

Barca were stunned and in countless interviews, their players have admitted they’re still coming to terms with what happened that May night.

Lionel Messi was exceptional on the night, but he was thwarted repeatedly by Alisson between our sticks.

The Argentine, who would have been a shoe-in for the Ballon d’Or if Barca had won the Champions League, has explained how the power of Anfield played a big role – more so than could happen outside of England.

He also said that this season, Barca simply have to score away from home in the knockout stages.

“The English stadiums help their teams a lot,” he said to Spanish outlet SPORT. “One bad performance, even if you have a lead, could see you be eliminated.

“It’s so important to score goals away from home if you are going to win the Champions League.

“When we won the Champions League, this was the case too. If I remember correctly, we scored in every away match.

“On top of everything else we did well, we always scored goals. If you don’t score away from home, it makes life difficult for you.”

“I already knew this, because it’s obvious, but that match left a greater mark. Scoring an away goal is an important step.”
Barca have Inter and Dortmund in their group, so should probably worry about getting through those games first.
Liverpool have an on paper easier group, but Napoli are a terrific side and Salzburg are underrated.
Still, we’re backing Jurgen Klopp’s Reds to get to the Last 16 at least and hopefully push on from there.
