Newcastle’s Anfield task gets harder with multitude of injuries

Earlier this week, a computer estimated that Newcastle had a three percent chance of winning at Anfield.

Somehow, that meagre value may have further diminished with news that they will be without a number of important players for their trip to Merseyside.

In defence, Matt Ritchie is out with an ankle injury, while the absence of DeAndre Yedlin (groin) and Florian Lejeune (knee) continues.

Young midfielder Sean Longstaff (ankle) could be a big miss, as could the pace and trickery of new signing Allan Saint-Maximin.

In slightly relieving news for Liverpool fans, perhaps, former Red Andy Carroll is not yet fit enough to play. A goal for him would have been strangely inevitable.

The Magpies, then, are without three of the players who started in their 1-0 win against Tottenham but will surely look to replicate that gameplan down to a T.

All in all, there’s reason to be very confident heading into this one, especially as we know Jurgen Klopp won’t allow any complacency to creep in.
