The simple stat that proves Reds criticism is wrong – and it’s only going to get even better

Liverpool have gone from being shaky at the back when Jurgen Klopp first arrived at the club to a side that very rarely concedes goals.

It got to a stage last season where it was a genuine shock when the Reds had to take a restart at Anfield, other than the obligatory one at the start of one half.

This season, though, there has been a perception from some pundits that defensive standards have slipped. Alan Shearer was just one of those who suggested that the Reds looked suspect against Newcastle United, despite running out comfortable winners in the end.

That perhaps stems from the fact that Alisson has been missing through injury. In the Brazilian’s absence, Adrian made one big error against Southampton, but other than that, his performances have been more than good enough.

The facts are simple: no team in the Premier League has conceded fewer goals than the Reds so far this season. Manchester City conceded three in one game against Norwich, just one more than the Reds have in their five matches combined.

When Alisson is back, that defensive record is only going to improve. If this is the Reds playing relatively poorly defensively, it just goes to show how far Klopp has taken the club.
