Carragher gives relaxed assessment of Napoli defeat

Jamie Carragher reminded Reds that they had got their ‘toughest game out the way’ after a first loss of the season in Naples.

Our sloppiness in the final third and a baffling VAR call made it a frustrating night, but in the grand scheme of things this defeat shouldn’t matter.

Liverpool don’t face Napoli again until Matchday Five at Anfield, by which point they realistically should have nine points on board from meetings with Salzburg and Genk (x2).

Moreover, there were a number of positives to take from a performance significantly better than we produced in this fixture last season.

It certainly wasn’t miles away from what you’d want away in Europe.

I’m not sure I agree with Carragher’s take on the penalty – I think I would have admitted we were fortunate if that got given for us!

But he’s right to bring a healthy dose of perspective in the wake of the defeat.

The player’s minds should already have shifted to producing a response against Chelsea on Sunday, and maintaining that early five-point buffer at the top of the table.
