Why Sturridge could face playing ban after only one game for new club

Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge faces a ban from football having only recently made his debut for new club Trabzonspor.

Sturridge, who joined the Super Lig outfit after reaching the end of his contract at Anfield, got his first outing on Sunday in a 2-2 draw with Genclerbirligi.

But hanging over him is an FA appeal against an independent commission’s verdict on his alleged violation of betting rules.

Sturridge was banned for a fortnight in July after it was ruled that he had urged his brother Leon to place a bet on him moving from Liverpool to Sevilla.

But he didn’t miss any matches in that time, and the FA have sought a firmer punishment.

According to Sky Sports, they will press the Turkish footballing authorities to implement any further sanctions which are imposed.

An enforced spell on the sidelines would make it difficult for Sturridge to truly launch his career away from England.

For now, he is preparing for a possible first start in Thursday’s Europa League meeting with Getafe.
