Ballon d’Or announces new award for goalkeepers, with Alisson surely a shoe-in

The magazine that runs the Ballon d’Or award, France Football, have announced that this season for the first time ever there’ll be a Ballon d’Or for goalkeepers – called the Yachine Trophy.

The award is voted for by European renowned football journalists and has been running ever since 1956. It is now the most highly coveted award for an individual footballer – but only once has a goalkeeper won it – Lev Yashin in 1963.

Here’s the announcement in the tweet below:

Alisson is surely the big favourite to win the Yachine Trophy, despite the injury which has stopped him from playing all but the first 20 minutes of this season.

The Brazilian won the Premier League Golden Glove award, helping his team to 97 points and 2nd place; the Champions League Golden Glove, helping his team win it; and the Copa America Golden Glove, helping his country win it.

That kind of season is practically unparalleled in terms of goalkeeping.

If Alisson doesn’t win it, it’s a travesty and proves the award doesn’t mean anything, in short.
