Klopp can’t believe Celtic allowed Robertson to slip through their fingers

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp can’t believe Scottish giants Celtic allowed Andy Robertson leave their academy. It was Queen’s Park that gave the full-back his chance, before he signed for Dundee and later moved to England.

The Scotland captain would go on to star for Hull City, sign for the Reds, and win the Champions League, writing himself in the folklore of one of the world’s most famous clubs.

Robertson totted up an incredible 13 assists in all competitions last season – so it’s easy to see why Klopp is confused at Celtic’s lack of foresight. “It’s so difficult to understand when you look at him now that
anyone could ever have let him go,the German boss told the Daily Record.

Left-back is such an important position and I don’t think in
Scotland they have 500 of them, do they? So it’s hard to imagine how you can give up on a boy like this.

It cannot be his personality or character. It cannot be his speed because he was always quick. It cannot be the quality of his left foot because it was always brilliant when he played for Hull and when I saw him play for Dundee United.

So a left-back with speed,
quality and character? You have to keep him and work with him. Yes, he had to improve his defending when he came here but he did it because he has a big heart and all I can say is it would have been a joy for me if I’d met him
 earlier than I did.

I’ll be honest, when we signed Robertson, I didn’t expect much from him – I genuinely thought we’d signed another Steve Finnan – a defender that just does the job.

But I was wrong. We signed a full-back that turned out to be the best in the whole of the United Kingdom, before he’d go on to prove he’s the best in Europe.

Klopp doesn’t see things how everyone else does.
