Klopp drops hint on James Milner’s future during press-conference

Jurgen Klopp would not be drawn into details on a new contract for James Milner, but told Liverpool’s pre-Sheffield United press conference today that the veteran midfielder has ‘a few more years in him’.

Milner’s current deal expires at the end of this season, meaning he is free to sign a Bosman contract with any European side from January – and can verbally agree with an English team (as he did with Liverpool from Manchester City in 2015) – as well.

Klopp has always been a massive fan of the evergreen utility man who has played in both midfield and left-back this season.

The 33-year-old was easily the best player on the pitch against MK Dons midweek, as he orchestrated Liverpool’s 2-0 win from an on-paper defensive position.

He still registered a goal and an assist!

“Unbelievably important to us,” Klopp said. “He is Mr Professional, that is how it is. Serious in what he does but a funny guy. Against MK Dons, five kids and you have six seniors. No chance [of complacency] while Milner is there. He is a role model for the team.

“He looks like he has a few more years in him, but contract talks, we don’t talk about here. Not even about Milner.”

Disregarding his undeniable footballing ability, Milner seems a fantastic person to have around the dressing room and the training ground.

Nobody puts in more effort at Melwood, or returns from the summer holiday in better condition.

He’s a brilliant example to all of our players on how to maximise ability, potential and longevity.

At club level, he’s virtually won it all, too – while collecting over 50 caps for his country.

We think there’s a one-year deal in him yet!
