Salzburg’s star man – with four hat-tricks this season so far – a doubt for Reds clash

The Reds face Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday night in the Champions League looking to pick up their first win of the group stage this season.

On matchday one, a defeat to Napoli took place, while Salzburg hammered Genk 6-2. The key man in that game, though, Erling Haaland, a 19-year-old Leeds-born Norway international forward, who has already scored four hat-tricks this season, is a doubt for the Anfield clash.

Reds hierarchy becoming ‘increasingly fearful’ that Jurgen Klopp could leave to take dream job

He missed Salzburg’s match against Austria Wien over the weekend through illness, meaning his league record for the season remains at 11 goals in eight matches so far – not bad for a teenager.

They didn’t miss him too much as they won 4-1 with striker Sekou Koita netting a brace.

Salzburg’s sporting director Christoph Freund told Viasat, via the Liverpool ECHO: “The next two days are important. He is checked by a doctor every day. He’s sick, and we don’t quite know when he will be back. Hopefully over the next few days.”

Even without their star man, Salzburg will be a big test for the Reds. At home, though, Jurgen Klopp will be confident that his players can get the job done.

Nothing less than a win will be sufficient for the Reds, who will want to tie up qualification to the knockout stages quickly and avoid another nervy matchday six.
