Gerard Houllier surprised by love he still gets from Liverpool fans

Gerard Houllier is perhaps one of Liverpool’s most underrated managers from the contemporary era.

The Frenchman was in charge of the Reds between 1998 and 2004, just before the reign of Rafa Benitez, winning a treble in 2001 and a League Cup title a couple of years later.

But Houllier has admitted that he’s shocked by the reception is still receives at Anfield to this day.

You know, when I go back to Liverpool I am surprised when the people are so nice to me,he’s quoted as saying by the Telegraph.

It is nice to go to Anfield and hear people speak so fondly of the European nights we started to bring back.

Like most things, Houllier’s reign at Liverpool didn’t end as well as we’d have all liked, but there’s no way he’d ever get a negative reception at Anfield.

I love comments like this from former players and managers of Liverpool – it really shows off just how much of a big family we really are.

The Frenchman will always be welcome at Anfield, and that goes for pretty much any manager we’ve had over the last 20-30 years or so.

Except for Roy Hodgson – that man nearly turned us into Fulham!
