Virgil van Dijk gives his verdict on Manchester City’s shock defeat against Wolves

Virgil van Dijk was as surprised as everyone else when he saw the score at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The defender is set to report for international duty with the Netherlands, where, alongside Gini Wijnaldum, he will be part of the team to face both Northern Ireland and Belarus.

Before that, though, he was asked about his opinion on the game that has given the Reds an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Dutch centre-back said: “I didn’t expect that, of course. Everyone expected a difficult game for City, but City at home – it doesn’t happen much that they don’t even score one goal at home.

“A great performance from Wolves, you have to give credit to them but you know the situation, you can’t really say much about it. They will try to bounce back from it and until then we’ve just got to focus on our international football, of course.”

It was an incredbile result, largely thanks to the brilliant dribbler Adama Traore. The winger is not known for his end product, but he certainly showed up well on the day.

The Reds face Manchester United next in the Premier League, while City go to Crystal Palace before then with the chance of momentarily cutting the gap to five points.

Pep Guardiola’s men come to Anfield in the second week of November, which sounds like a long time off, but there will only have been another three rounds of Prmier League matches completed before then.
