Steve McClaren blown away by Liverpool midfield duo Wijnaldum & Fabinho

Former Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has spoken about his admiration for Liverpool duo Gini Wijnaldum and Fabinho.

The midfielders have been playing some great football of late, with Gini smashing it for the Dutch national team in recent months.

But it’s Fabinho that seems to have blown away McClaren the most, who admits that he didn’t think much of the Brazilian when he first signed.

I had Gini at Newcastle, brought him over from Holland and he’s just going to a different level,” McClaren told Sky Sports, as per Anfield Watch.

Also, Fabinho, I was a little doubtful when he first came, but I have got to say that he has grown and grown into the stature.

We were just talking about [Declan] Rice and [Harry] Winks in trying to find an answer for England. He has certainly been the answer for Liverpool.

I get what McClaren is saying about Rice and Winks, but it doesn’t come off as the best analogy to make – that being said, a compliment is a compliment!

Fabinho and Wijnaldum have been two of the most consistent midfielders for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, and only James Milner and Jordan Henderson come close.

Going forward, it’ll be very interesting to see how the boss tackles the starting XI when Naby Keita is fighting fit. Does he drop the captain? It’d be difficult to drop either of Fab or Gini.
