Joel Matip signs mega new LFC contract; Every star now tied down for years

Congratulations, Joel Matip.

Liverpool’s Cameroonian defender has extended his contract and will now be with us for the best years of his career.

The official website confirmed this afternoon that the centre-back had put pen to paper on a deal that was due to expire at the end of next season.

There’s no word on the exact length of the new contract, but we presume it will be five years – as it has been for all the extensions recently – which will see Matip reach his 33rd birthday with us and 2024 should he see it out.

According to Transfermarkt, virtually every single one of Liverpool’s regular starters is contracted until 2023 or 2024, with only James Milner (2020) expiring fairly imminently. Gini Wijnaldum’s deal runs until 2021.

This season, and in fact, the entirety of 2019, Matip has been nothing short of world-class. His partnership with Virgil van Dijk is one of the strengths of our team and the fact he often outshines the Dutchman says it all.

He’s been training at Melwood this week and should be fit to take in the team for Sunday’s game with Manchester United – with Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren deputising in his absence.

Let’s hope he celebrates the new deal with a win!
