Liverpool to compete in new 24-team FIFA Club World Cup in 2021

Liverpool and Chelsea are set to compete with 22 other teams from around the world for the FIFA Club World Cup in 2021.

The new tournament is to replace the Confederations Cup, Europe will put forward eight teams in total, and it will take place in China.

The winners of the Champions League and Europa League from 2019 and 2020 are to play – as reported by the Daily Mail, teams like Atletico and Real Madrid are also expected to take part.

It’s unclear as to how other clubs will qualify for the FCWC in 2021, but it has been suggested that winners of domestic trophies (such as the FA Cup or Coppa Italia) may get put forward.

However I feel it’s more likely that the winners of Europe’s top six leagues will be invited – as the winners of the CL and EL will have already qualified for it. But that’s just my opinion.

South America are to put forward six teams to compete, to go along with the ten clubs picked from around the world.

The Confederations Cup hasn’t been the most popular over the years, and it seems pretty clear that FIFA have taken note of this and have moved to replace it.
