Roberto Firmino was incredibly unlucky to see his goal chalked off in the first period, while the host’s opening goal looked on first viewing to be offside.

In the end, the Reds got the job done and the three points were earned the hard way – and with that in mind, Klopp took the chance to take aim at the Premier League.

Had he said the same thing after a loss, the criticism would have flown his way, but with a win, he could get away with it.

The Reds face Manchester City in the Premier League next Sunday – hopefully with a few less VAR controversies involved. That should be a momentous occasion whatever the result, and it would be a massive shame to see refereeing decisions overshadow it.
