A ‘sixth sense’: Adam Lallana outlines why Liverpool have a knack for late goals

Adam Lallana has attempted to put into words the incredible mentality that Jurgen Klopp has instilled into him and his Liverpool teammates.

Since the German arrived at Anfield in October 2015, the Reds have scored 15 winning goals after the 80th minute and 11 of those have come after minute 86, a record not even close to being matched by any other Premier League side in the same period of time.

That mentality is proving invaluable in the title race, with the Reds currently six points ahead of Manchester City, who mounted a comeback of their own at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday to beat Southampton.

Lallana told the Liverpool ECHO: “We keep getting late goals. Another two today, we got one midweek, Manchester United, obviously my goal a couple of weeks ago now. The resilience and character is just there in abundance.

“It’s almost like a sixth sense and we knew once we got one goal then that [second] was going to come and we got that [first] goal late, but we had enough time and the deliveries from set-pieces that we have in our team with Trent, it’s such a weapon.”

Lallana added that when the squad came in for half-time, they were not made aware of the Manchester City score (at the time, Pep Guardiola’s men were also a goal down, but also turned their game around for a 2-1 victory).

Despite his good performances over the last couple of matches, Lallana could find himself out of the side this week for two crucial games at Anfield, with Fabinho expected to start against both Genk and Manchester City having been left out at Villa Park with the threat of a suspension hanging over his head.
