Angry Robbie Fowler said what most Reds fans were thinking about referee Martin Atkinson against Aston Villa

Robbie Fowler took to Twitter on Saturday to join in with Reds fans berating Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Martin Atkinson, who was at the centre of an officiating storm at Villa Park.

Atkinson ruled out Roberto Firmino’s goal but gave Trezeguet’s for Aston Villa, while he completely missed a blatant handball from one of the home side’s defenders, which should have been a penalty kick to the Reds.

Fowler was by no means the only one to complain about Atkinson – Steven Gerrard has been saying it for years. No Reds fan was impressed with him during the game, and most were relieved to get the three points despite him by full-time.

Thankfully, the referee for the Manchester City clash at Anfield next Sunday afternoon is Michael Oliver, while the VAR is Paul Tierney. Martin Atkinson has been given Newcastle United vs Bournemouth at St James’ Park, which will take place on Saturday.
