(Video) Sterling lucky to avoid red-card for nasty stamp on VVD’s ankle late on

We remember this incident at the time, but were actually too happy to worry too much about it due to the fact we were on the cusp of beating Manchester City 3-1.

But it’s gone viral on Twitter today, and in slow-motion, looks really bad.

With the game done, Virgil van Dijk was in possession of the ball on our byline, with Raheem Sterling closing him down.

Van Dijk cleared the ball, with Sterling nowhere near it – but Manchester City’s winger – who had already had an altercation with Joe Gomez that has since carried on during England duty and got him thrown out of the squad – continues the challenge and goes for our no.4’s ankle.

There’s no doubt it’s a deliberate act when you watch these pictures, courtesy of Sky Sports:

It’s actually pretty nasty, and we’re just happy the world’s best defender isn’t injured.

There’s already a worry about Mo Salah’s fitness following a challenge from Fernandinho – so we can only cross our fingers van Dijk is ok following this nonsensical foul.
