“Convenient”: Some LFC fans furious as Man City’s Bernardo Silva hit with ban after Anfield visit

Manchester City star Bernardo Silva has been hit with a one match ban and a £50,000 fine, less than a week after visiting Anfield.

The Portugal international sent out a Tweet over two months ago which made reference to a cartoon character with dark skin and his team-mate Benjamin Mendy.

He remarked how similar the two looked, and it didn’t go down well. Obviously. There was some defence from City for the player, Pep Guardiola basically said ‘he didn’t mean it’, but they should have just told him to put his hands up – he made a mistake. Acknowledgement and an apology wouldn’t have gone amiss.

Some Liverpool fans are fuming that the decision just happened to actually happen literal days after City’s visit to Anfield – and some of those supporters are accusing the FA of something fishy.

Obviously racism is an issue of much greater magnitude, we’re not suggesting otherwise, but it does seem a little convenient that the decision took so long on Silva.

As it took longer than expected for the FA to come to a decision, it meant Silva was able to feature in the game at Anfield. In a world where the Reds are now being referred to as LiVARpool, even though we – quite literally – haven’t benefited from the tech – it’s kind of funny to see this.

I mean, it’s probably just a coincidence, and it had nothing to do with the fixtures, but people are obviously going to talk when it looks a bit dodgy.

Here’s how some Liverpool fans responded on social media:
