Journo provides worrying Fabinho injury update as Brazilian leaves Anfield in protective boot

Never mind the 1-1 draw last night and the shabby performance of the referee…

The main issue from Wednesday’s Champions League clash was the injury to Fabinho and the potential severity of it.

Our holding midfielder, arguably our most consistent and best player this season, limped off after only 20 minutes or so after picking up a problem around his shin and ankle in a tackle.

“I don’t want to say what I expect,” Klopp told BBC Sport after the game.

“It’s early and we all hope it’s not too serious but it’s pretty painful and in an area you don’t want to have pain, around the ankle.”

The Daily Mail’s Dom King has said while Fabinho will have a scan today, Klopp’s tone intimates the injury could be a big one.

Fabinho is banned for Saturday’s Brighton game anyway, but with the hectic run of December fixtures, it looks like he could potentially miss the Merseyside Derby and then some more.

This would be awful as he’s easily our best midfielder and someone whose role in the team almost defines us stylistically.

In his absence, Jordan Henderson will or Gini Wijnaldum will have to switch to no.6 and hopefully Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain can come into the central three.
