Van Dijk slams referee for missed foul: ‘I’m not going down for no reason’

Virgil van Dijk was rightly seething following last night’s draw, with Napoli’s goal allowed to stand despite a clear foul on him in its buildup.

Dries Mertens, the eventual scorer, didn’t look at the ball and bumped into the Dutchman while he was in the air – leaving our no.4 in a pile on the floor.

The Belgian then got sent through on goal – thanks to a van Dijk shaped hole in our defence – and finished past Alisson – who in our opinion, should have done better in terms of his positioning.

“Yeah I’m not going down for no reason,” van Dijk told beinSPORTS, cited in the Echo.

“I won the ball and don’t think he wanted to challenge for the ball.

“He touched me, I think it is a foul. The referee, I think, didn’t have his best day today. That’s what it is.”

Liverpool haven’t kept a clean-sheet at Anfield once all season – spanning three competitions and ten matches.

That’s a strange and bizarre record, especially considering the fact we’re undefeated at home and usually score more than the opposition.

But this time last season we were racking up clean-sheets for fun – which enabled Alisson to win the Golden Gloves in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Dejan Lovren has done fairly well alongside van Dijk, but Joel Matip should return before Christmas and will hope to win his spot back – considering how superbly he was doing before the injury.

Van Dijk hopes to win this year’s Ballon d’Or, which is announced on December 2, two days before the Merseyside Derby.
