Alisson: Why I’m now keeping clean-sheets…

Alisson kept his first clean-sheet of the season against Bournemouth at the weekend, and followed it up with another last night in the Champions League victory over Rb Salzburg.

Hopefully, this will now see the Brazilian, who won the Golden Gloves last season, start racking up plenty more.

“It was just a matter of time and of focus,” the goalkeeper told the club’s official website, when asked how the team ended the run of 15 matches without a shutout…

“The last two games, we were focused for the full game. Even if they had chances we were there, the defenders were there and I was there to help the team.

“We just need to keep going with this focus because we know our quality and we know what we can do on the pitch when we put in our whole intensity.

“You need to do that for 90 minutes – it’s hard, we know, but I think we showed we can do this.”

Alisson’s individual form this term hasn’t been his brilliant best since his return from the sidelines, but it now seems he’s found an incredibly high level again. His positioning v Salzburg was superb, for example.

Interestingly, Joe Gomez is likely set for an extended spell in the backline alongside Virgil van Dijk, with Joel Matip out until the New Year and Dejan Lovren limping off last night and complaining of a hamstring problem post-match.

It was the back-five of Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Gomez and Virgil that kept so many clean-sheets at the beginning of 2018/19, of course, before Gomez’s nasty injury.

Now he’s fully fit and returning to form, we hope he can establish himself as a deserved starter and compete for the spot next to the Dutchman with Matip.
