Van Dijk waxes lyrical on ‘under-appreciated’ Henderson: ‘He’s our leader’

Naby Keita was named Man of the Match against Bournemouth and Rb Salzburg, but in reality, the awards could have easily gone to Jordan Henderson in both games.

The skipper has been covering for Fabinho in holding midfielder and has done so with aplomb. If anything, he’s actually showed a greater passing range than the phenomenal Brazilian – creating Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal at the weekend and Mo Salah’s last night.

Virgil van Dijk, our ever-present, world-class defender, made sure to praise Henderson in his post-match interview, following Liverpool’s 2-0 Champions League victory that secured our passage to the Last 16.

“Jordan is such an important player for this team,” Virgil van Dijk told The Athletic. “The contribution he makes goes unnoticed sometimes. I don’t know if he’s under-appreciated outside the club, but inside the club I know how highly we all think of him. He’s our captain and he always leads by example.

“He created the second goal with a great pass and always works so hard for the team. We all appreciate what he does for Liverpool, both on and off the pitch. He’s a leader.”

Before his injury, Fabinho had arguably been our best performer this season, which makes the fact we haven’t missed him all the more impressive.

And the reason why is Henderson. He prefers to play as a roaming no.8, but the way he’s switched position and actually started playing his best football of the campaign is a testament to his professionalism.

Hopefully next week he’ll be lifting the Club World Cup aloft as just reward.
