How Manchester United botched Minamino deal through ignorance of release-clause

Manchester United have been scouting Takumi Minamino ‘for months’, writes Dave Maddock in the Mirror, but were somehow unaware of his £7.25m release-clause.

Liverpool did their due diligence though, found out about the clause and pounced – and Minamino will sign for the Reds on January 1 subject to a medical – says the report.

Maddock claims that Minamino was being considered by the Old Trafford hierarchy as an alternative to James Maddison, and it’ll likely be quite embarrassing for our rivals that we’ve snared him from under their nose.

This makes the deal even sweeter, in all honesty.

Hopefully Minamino can have a Fabinho-like effect on our side eventually, after the Brazilian was linked heavily to United before sealing an Anfield switch.

Next month we play Everton in the FA Cup, so like Virgil van Dijk did in 2018, that could be perfect for the Japanese international’s debut.

Hopefully like the Dutchman, he’ll find the back of the net, too!
