Wijnaldum points to ‘behind the scenes’ circumstances that led to Liverpool departure

Gini Wijnaldum has said that he will reveal what prompted him to leave Liverpool as a free agent after the European Championships, citing “things happening behind the scenes”.

The soon-to-be ex-No.5 cleared his teammates, those at the AXA training centre and the club staff of playing any part in his departure, explaining that many wished for him to remain at Anfield.

“There are many supporters who ask me why I didn’t just accept the offer from Liverpool to extend my contract,” the Dutchman told Voetbal International (via Sport Witness).

“But of course, it’s not just that. It’s about much more than that. There are things happening behind the scenes that you cannot influence as a player.

“I will explain that after the tournament, because now only Orange counts.

“What I do want to say is that the people at the training complex, the staff of the club and my fellow players would have liked to keep me.

“I did tell them a bit more. After that, they understood my decision completely. That is important to me.”

The Merseysiders were thought to be keen on extending the 30-year-old’s stay, though contract talks failed to reach a meaningful resolution.

With the likes of Jurgen Klopp and co. not at fault, it will be highly interesting to find out who the Dutch international blames for his exit.

The wages on offer and the length of the contract were likely clashing points between club and player, though the former Newcastle star’s comments seem to suggest that there may be more to the story than was initially thought.

Regardless, whether Wijnaldum ends up at PSG (as is strongly suspected) or Barcelona, we at the EOTK will wish him nothing but the best going forward.

  1. For the 100th time, pls stop with Gini already. He is gone. We know why he left no one needs telenovelas to clarify anything. He is not the first or last to use the Bosman rule to get larger salary elsewhere . Simple. It was always about money and length of contract. He wanted 4 years and a big increase. . Liverpool only agreed to 3 and some increase. He felt as free agent he can command more and it seems he did. Good on him. We should have sold him last year for 20mil but we were short of options so we took his last year of service vs no compensation at the end. It’s done.
We now know it was never about that he dreamed to play for Barca and Koeman and such.. all about money, as soon as PSG threw the checkbook at him he forgot about the ‘dream’.. and who can blame him. He was an excellent player for us for 5 years. Thank you and good bye. If injuries finally catch up to him he will be on someone else’s dime LOL.. we have our own dead wood to get rid of.. Shaq, Keita, Matip, Ox. Constantly injured..

    1. Totally agree with the above comment.

Liverpool as a club was good for Gini and he was good Liverpool. His wage demands were never going to be justified when he was over 30 years old and past his best. I am sure the accountants weighed up the extra salary costs and decided that he was not worth the punt as he will get injured a lot more from now on and a younger and fresher talent will not demand the same wages.

I wish him well, to an extent, but NO player is bigger than the club and he only ever played abroad for the cash. If he was as loyal as people suggest he would have stayed in Holland. Wages are double at least in England.
