Brendan Rodgers ramps up contract talks with midfielder as Liverpool circle – report

Leicester City are believed to be upping their efforts to get a new contract boxed off for star midfielder Youri Tielemans.

That’s according to Daily Mail journalist Tom Collomosse, via MSN, who cites Liverpool’s interest as a reason for Brendan Rodgers’ eagerness to get a deal arranged.

The above report states Tielemans is currently on holiday, but Leicester City will be looking to start contract talks as soon as he returns.

Belgian news outlet Het Nieuwsblad reported back in May that Liverpool are very interested in the player and he’d be keen on a move to Anfield, effectively replacing Gini Wijnaldum.

Gini Wijnaldum left Liverpool earlier this summer for Paris Saint-Germain

With 237 appearances under his belt from the last five seasons at Anfield, replacing the ever-present Dutchman will be no easy task, should the Reds look to do so this summer.

Tielemans is an exciting potential target, and if the rumours are to be believed, Jurgen Klopp and co. are certainly looking in the right areas for a suitable replacement.

  1. The worrying thing for Rodgers and Leicester City is the question of how can it get any better for Tielemens? He’s just scored the winning goal for the club in the FA Cup final. They failed to make the Champions League and will not be challenging for the league. For the player, his profile is at an all time high, he has appeared to have proved himself in the league, although he isn’t as dominating as you might imagine, the worry for him is that, for him, the only way is down if he stays at Leicester. Tough for Rodgers and the foxes, but that seems to be the nature of football these days. From Liverpool’s perspective, I’d be rather nervous at making him a big money signing as he is not much more than a better than average PL midfielder. I’d much rather make a big money signing for a young English player, in fact, at Leicester, I’d rather take Harvey Barnes. Paying a big fee for Tielemens will come with added pressure that never helps just ask Naby Keita.
