The financial ramifications of COVID-19 have left some clubs reeling in a desperate bid to get their finances back on track – most notably a number of European heavyweights outside the English top-flight.
Courtesy of the Premier League’s significant TV deal, the damage has been less dramatic but still notable for clubs like Liverpool and their spending plans, though that hasn’t stopped Gabby Agbonlahor from drawing attention to the Reds’ rivals’ business.
“There’s a big danger for Liverpool,” the former attacker told Football Insider.
“Yes, they’ve brought in a defender who is supposed to be very good but they’re standing still
“Man United have brought in Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane. Man City are talking about Jack Grealish and Harry Kane. Chelsea are talking about Romelu Lukaku and Erling Haaland.
“You’re not hearing anything from Liverpool. They’re standing still. That’s very dangerous because they’ve got an ageing front line who need a bit of help and fresh legs to add competition.
“Losing Gini Wijnaldum’s legs in midfield is a big loss too.
“For me, they need to do something in the transfer window. Diogo Jota’s a very good player but he was very poor at the Euros so that shows he’s not reliable as well.”
Jurgen Klopp’s men are thought to remain interested in both a new midfielder and attacker, though reports have questioned whether the Merseysiders’ finances will stretch to two signings this summer.
With it being suggested that the next summer window could be the ‘big’ one, the frustration felt by fans as our rivals eye up big money moves for Europe’s elite is understandable.
That having been said, it’s a very different ball game for sides like Manchester City and Chelsea, whose financial backing is only rivalled by clubs like PSG.
Replacing Gini Wijnaldum nonetheless remains a priority we cannot afford to overlook this summer, particularly with our midfield’s recent injury record.

Liverpool only needed 2 or 3 top players to add to a fully fit squad, we have a top CB in Konate already in, a replacement for Gini would be ideal but we have lots of CM options tbf, a loose forward who can play either flank would be good too.
Harvey Elliott will get more game time by the looks of it?, a very good technical player who creates lots of chances across the front 3 if necessary, we also have Jota who is quality.
Our squad is proven and wins big trophies, I’m sure we will sign at least one more player before deadline day, we currently have 8 CB’s:
VVD
Gomez
Matip
Konate
Nat Phillips
Rhys Williams
Ben Davies
Billy Koumetio
So more sales & loans are likely before more incomings?, frustrating yes but no need to panic.
ah so “next summer is the big one but not this summer” funny I feel like I’ve heard that before…. quite a few times actually…….
